AlphaSport RX-8

Supported by RotaryMotion, the AlphaSport RX-8 SE3P utilises the standard and normally aspirated 13B-RENESIS engine yet still delivers class winning performance within MSA Production Touring/Saloon Car regulations.

Initially brought to us by customer AlphaSport and Antony Weeks, we have significantly developed the car over the 2016 season whilst racing in the Castle Combe Racing Club Saloon Car and Welsh Sports & Saloon Car Championships.

CCRC Saloon Car Championship

Originally built to compete in the Castle Combe Racing Club Saloon Car Championship, the RX-8 fits into their Class B of their regulation structure based on a rotary co-efficient of 1.7:1 (the same as used for turbocharged cars). This meant that once a turbocharged 1500cc Colt entered with over 360bhp, the RX-8 was always going to struggle for performance.

Despite this, AlphaSport continued to develop the car alongside RotaryMotion in order to extract the maximum performance within their strict production car regulations.

After a few initial niggles with oil surge and an unfortunate incident with an unproved 'lunge', Antony and the team secured their first Class win and race finish on a visit to Donington Park in June 2016. This was followed by several 4th in Class finishes at Castle Combe where we found that the RX-8 is particularly sensitive to tyre pressures adjusted in conjunction with both ambient and track temperatures. With a good handle on these at the last round of the season, Antony enjoyed an excellent battle with a 1500cc VW Lupo and 1600cc Supercharged Mini Cooper S overcoming both just before the chequered flag.

With a number of Class B cars apparently absent from the 2017 Championship and a heavily revised and peripheral ported engine on the horizon, decisions have not yet been made about a return to the Championship for 2017 - especially as we are building an RX-7 FD3S specifically for the CCRC Sports & GT Championship!

Welsh Sports & Saloon Car Championship

The Welsh Sports & Saloon Car Championship was an 'addition' to season where the AlphaSport RX-8 was entered during their visiting round at Castle Combe which coincided with a CCRC Saloon Car round.

Running in the BT Class (again a co-efficient of 1:4.1 was applied) on treaded tyres, Antony enjoyed some good battles with a Clio 16v, Lotus Elise (BS) and Mazda MX-5 before crossing the line 4th in Class. Based on the class competition and despite the fast circuit, the RX-8 proved to be more competitive in the Welsh championship prompting a visit to Pembrey later in the year.

A change to the BS class due to the pending wet weather proved an excellent choice with Antony lining up 3rd in Class after a wet and oil surge filled qualifying. Unfortunately the car suffered with extensive high oil pressure so was unable to complete the round.

A return to Class BS at Pembrey for the final round of the season saw Antony's well-placed joker, pole position, fastest laps and two class wins secure him 3rd in the Class Championship at the end of the season. We are now focussing on this Championship for the RX-8 in 2017 whilst an RX-7 FD3S is being prepared for the CCRC Sports & GT Championship.
